Dholes are only about the size of a border collie. They are 3 feet in length and 20 inches tall at the shoulder. Their tail is 15 to 18 inches long. Males are slightly larger and heavier than females.
Once widespread throughout much of Asia, the wild dog known as the dhole has disappeared from more than 75% of its historical range, according to the IUCN, the global wildlife conservation authority.
